Understanding respiratory rate

What your overnight breathing rate measures, why your own baseline matters and how NOYU uses it.

You take somewhere around fifteen breaths a minute in your sleep, and tonight's figure will land within about a breath of last night's. A number that steady earns attention on the rare occasions it moves.

What respiratory rate measures

Respiratory rate is how many breaths you take per minute. Most healthy adults sit somewhere between 12 and 20 breaths per minute at rest.

Your wearable measures it while you sleep, and when NOYU shows a respiratory rate, it means this overnight figure: your average across the night that just ended.

The overnight window matters for the same reason it does for HRV. Awake, your breathing moves with everything you do: talking, walking, climbing stairs, concentrating. Asleep, you're lying still in roughly the same state every night, so one night can fairly be compared with another.

Why your own baseline matters

Between two people, resting breathing rates differ for reasons that have nothing to do with health: body size, lung capacity, fitness, age. Within one person, the overnight rate is steady, often within a breath per minute from night to night.

That combination tells you how to read it: your 13 against someone else's 16 means nothing, while your 15 against your own usual 13 is worth noticing.

So NOYU compares your respiratory rate with your own recent pattern: a rolling baseline built from your last 30 nights, always using the nights before the one being judged, so tonight never counts towards the baseline it's compared against. It takes about five nights of data before NOYU trusts a baseline enough to use it.

How NOYU uses it

Respiratory rate appears in your data with the same trend view as your other metrics, smoothed over a rolling week so one odd night doesn't swing the line.

It also feeds Readiness, and only in one direction. A breathing rate above your baseline counts against the score, because a sustained rise is a well-established early sign that your body is fighting something. A rate below your baseline neither helps nor hurts. Slower breathing isn't a prize to chase.

It's one of the smaller parts of Readiness - HRV and sleeping heart rate carry more weight. And if your device doesn't report breathing rate at all, NOYU drops it and rebalances around the metrics you do have. A missing metric never costs you.

What wearables can and cannot measure

A wrist or finger wearable doesn't measure airflow. It infers your breathing rate from the small rhythmic effects breathing has on your heartbeat and your movement. That inference works well overnight and produces a useful trend, but it is an estimate.

In practice, expect the occasional missing night, and the occasional reading thrown off by a loose strap or a restless few hours. Treat any single night's figure lightly. The pattern across a week is the part that carries information, and a change worth acting on will still be there tomorrow.
