Keeping track each day

The daily tick, why an unanswered day is never a no, and the experiments that count themselves.

James ParsloeBy James3 min read

Most experiments ask you one question a day: did you do the thing? One tap.

An unanswered day is not a missed day

If you do not answer, that day is recorded as unknown. It is never counted as a no.

This matters more than it sounds. If silence counted against you, the result would quietly assume you failed on days you forgot to open the app, and the honest read at the end would be built on invented data.

Answering "no" is useful information. Not answering is an absence of information, and NOYU treats the two differently.

Where the tick goes

Your daily answer is stored on a real journal item, not a special experiment-only field.

So a "finish eating earlier" experiment records against the standard late meal item you could track anyway. Three consequences, all good:

  • Anything you already logged for that item becomes free baseline data.
  • Your journal stays coherent, rather than filling up with a dozen dead one-off items.
  • When the experiment ends, the item is still there if you want to carry on.

For experiments where the point is to avoid something, the honest answer is inverted for you. Logging "no alcohol" counts as a kept day. You answer the journal item truthfully and NOYU works out what it means for the experiment.

Catching up

You can fill in the last seven days if you have fallen behind. You can also just tell NOYU in the chat: "I kept it yesterday and the day before" works.

The Zone 2 experiment is different

The Zone 2 cardio experiment has no daily tick. It counts your sessions straight from your wearable.

The rule is: if it was not recorded, it did not count. There is no way to claim a session you did not track, which keeps this one honest.

A session qualifies if it is at least twenty minutes, is not obviously non-aerobic (strength, yoga, pilates and similar are excluded), and your average heart rate sits at or below the top of your zone 3.

Where NOYU cannot check something, it is lenient rather than punitive. If it does not have your heart rate or your zones for a session, the session still counts rather than being thrown out for a device's shortcoming. Sessions recorded by two devices at once are deduplicated.

This experiment also works on a weekly target rather than a daily one. Hit your minutes for the week and the nudges stop until the week rolls over. A rest day is not a missed day, which is how easy cardio works.

How much you need to keep

Two thresholds:

  • 60% of the window. Below this, the result will not offer a verdict, because there is not enough signal to say anything honest.
  • Finishing early needs at least 8 days elapsed and 5 days kept.

Falling below 60% does not mean you get nothing. You get a warm, honest read of what you did log, and NOYU will not tell you off. It just will not pretend the data supports a conclusion it does not.

Reminders

You get one daily push, at a time that suits the change: morning for a light experiment, evening for a wind-down one. You can turn it off entirely when you set the experiment up.

In the app, the experiment card doubles as your status: "Day 6 of 14, result on the 28th".
