Your sleep need is how much sleep you need to feel your best. NOYU starts everyone at 8h 15m, then learns yours from the mornings you wake without an alarm. Your sleep debt and your wake window use it, and so does the length part of your sleep score.
How NOYU learns yours
People need different amounts of sleep, and research suggests a good guide to yours is how long you sleep when nothing wakes you, after a few nights of your usual sleep. NOYU looks for these free mornings in your last year of nights: mornings you slept in, that weren't catching up after a run of short nights. Once it has seen enough of them, it works out a figure from them.
Until then, the need sheet says "A starting figure, until NOYU learns your sleep need".
When NOYU suggests a change
NOYU checks your free mornings about once a month. When its figure differs from your need by half an hour or more, it suggests it under your need on the Sleep page and the sleep debt page. Tap Use to take it, or Not now to keep yours until the next check.
NOYU never changes your sleep need without asking.
Setting your own
On the Sleep page, tap Edit beside Your sleep need, under Your nights, or choose Edit your sleep need from the menu. Set it between 6 and 11 hours, in 15-minute steps, then tap Save. Your sleep debt changes once it's saved.
Under the figure, the sheet says where it came from: "Worked out from your free mornings", or "Edited by you" with NOYU's figure beside it.
What changes when you change it
- Your sleep debt uses the new need straight away, for past days too.
- Your sleep score uses it from your next night. Past scores keep the need they were scored with, so they don't change.
- Your wake window moves with it.
